The city of Ruston was originally developed in the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War. Built on land donated by Robert Edwin Russ, the town was named Ruston in honor of the founder who envisioned the city as a place for friends and neighbors.
With the expansion of the railroad, the city developed, and in the 1970’s the development of the interstate highway at the north edge of the city made Ruston more accessible for individuals traveling coast-to-coast. Today, Ruston is home to Louisiana Tech University, and close to nearby Grambling State. Over time, the town's universities have come to define the city's culture and community.
The city is also enriched with a number of other attractions, like the Dixie Center for the Arts, a classic movie cinema turned events center listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dixie Center showcases regional arts, performances, events, symphonies, and more. Other cultural touchstones in the city include the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Museum, the Ruston Farmers Market, and of course the great outdoors. Ruston is in Sportsman's Paradise, where hunting, fishing, and exploring the great outdoors are just steps away.
